The National Indigenous Knowledges Education Research and Innovation (NIKERI) Institute has a proud 30-year history of supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People through community-based education programs.
We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the unceded lands and waterways on which Deakin University does business. We pay our deep respect to the Ancestors and Elders of Wadawurrung Country, Eastern Maar Country and Wurundjeri Country, where our physical campuses are located. We also acknowledge all First Nations Peoples that make contributions to our learning.
Deakin’s vision for reconciliation builds on a long and successful history of initiatives, education, research and partnerships with and for Indigenous Australians. The agenda has been developed in close consultation with the director and senior colleagues from the Institute of Koorie Education, together with senior leaders from all areas of the University.
Our Agenda 2016–2020 sets out a roadmap for change with specific targets, opportunities and strategies to get us there.

Deakin offers a range of flexible study options across interest areas that support you on your university journey. You can study in intensive blocks through the NIKERI Institute or enrol full or part-time in the relevant faculty.
The Indigenous Access Scheme recognises the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and considers the skills, experience and community work that prepares you for university.
The Indigenous Entry Stream is a partnership between the School of Medicine and the NIKERI Institute, created exclusively to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to become healthcare practitioners.
