Vice-Chancellor’s Academic Excellence Scholarship

Deakin’s prestigious Vice-Chancellor’s Academic Excellence Scholarship is awarded each year to eligible undergraduate students whose exceptional academic achievements and extracurricular activities truly set them apart.

Benefits: 100% of your tuition fees paid; cash payment of $5000 per year; inclusion in the Vice-Chancellor’s Professional Excellence Program.

Value: $35,000 to $80,000, depending on your course duration

ATAR: 95 and above

Deakin Scholarship for Excellence

This scholarship is designed for students who show exceptional promise within and beyond their academic achievements. Strong academic performance and excellence in extracurricular activities, sport, the arts, community service or leadership all hold the key to success.

Value: $5,000 paid per year as cash or towards tuition or a combination

International student scholarships

One of our international scholarships can help transform your future. We offer scholarships that that recognise high academic performance and the potential to make a positive contribution to the University and its community.

How to apply for a scholarship

Supporting documents

When applying for a scholarship, you normally need to submit documents to support your application. It's important to submit the right documents with your application before the scholarship closing date.

Research scholarships

We offer a range of government and University-funded scholarships available to support you during your candidature. PhD and research degree scholarships can cover tuition fees, overseas student health cover, living allowances paid as stipends and relocation allowances.

The majority of PhD and research degree scholarships are awarded in the annual scholarship round. To be competitive for a research scholarship you'll need to have a H1 grade average or equivalent. To browse the full range of PhD and research degree scholarships, use our Find a scholarship tool.

Deakin HDR Scholarship

Deakin HDR scholarships are available to domestic and international students.

  • A stipend of $30,000 (2023 rate) per annum tax exempt
  • A relocation allowance from $500 to $1500 (for single to family) awarded to students who are moving from interstate or overseas in order to study at Deakin
  • For international students only: Single Overseas Student Health Cover policy for the duration of the Student Visa. Tuition fees offset for four years for Doctoral degree and two years for Research masters

PhD scholarship – Fulbright Commission

The Australian-American Fulbright Commission is a non-profit organisation sponsored by the United States and Australian governments, institutional and business partners and private bequests and endowments.

The commission promotes education and cultural exchange between Australia and the US, in order to enhance mutual understanding and strengthen relations between the two countries.

HDR Scholarship – NHMRC People Support Grants – Postgraduate scholarships

The NHMRC postgraduate scholarships scheme funds successful applicants to attain a research-based postgraduate degree (Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or a Masters degree).

External scholarships

As well as our own scholarships, Deakin students can apply for external scholarships offered by organisations not affiliated with the University.

Deakin alumni discount

Deakin alumni discount

We reward Deakin alumni by offering a 10% reduction per unit on their enrolment fees in a postgraduate award course (excluding students enrolled in a Commonwealth supported place) at Deakin.

Scholarship payments

If you're selected to receive a scholarship, your Scholarship Letter of Offer or Scholarship Terms and Conditions will list the applicable eligibility and special conditions.

Some scholarships will make a payment directly to your nominated bank account. This will normally be processed four weeks after census date. If your scholarship covers part or all of your student contributions/tuition fees, payment will be applied directly to your fee account within four weeks after census date.

If you're a part-time student, scholarships are generally taxable and will need to be declared as taxable income. The University may withhold tax if you're studying a part-time load. Visit the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) website for more information on whether or not your scholarship is taxable.
