Understanding preferencing

While course preferencing doesn’t take place until Year 12, it’s a process senior high school students should become familiar with. Here are a few tips to get you started (and if you need more information, we’re here to help).

  1. Understand your prerequisites now so that you’re prepared for the Year 11 and 12 subjects required for course eligibility  – they can be found in the entry requirements section on courses pages.

  2. You apply to study at university through Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC), rather than directly to each institution, and you can apply for up to eight courses in order of preference. VTAC will offer you a place in the highest preference you’re eligible for, based on your ATAR and rank.

  3. Your top preferences should be the courses you want to get into, rather than the courses you think you’ll get into. It's a good idea to start looking at the courses you're interested in as early as Year 10 and Year 11, so you can get a sense of the ATAR you are aiming for. The ATAR may shift up or down a little every year, but it provides a good indication.
