Opening this week at the Deakin University Art Gallery is the exhibition Art School Confidential.

Taking its title from Terry Swiggoff's 2006 movie, Art School Confidential similarly celebrates artist's unexpected beginnings, creative discoveries and artistic journeys in all their varied and divergent forms. The exhibition by teaching staff from Deakin University's School of Communication and Creative Arts and wider faculty, features artworks that were created whilst they attended art school including examples of painting, photography, print, video and sculptural practice.

As Deakin curator James Lynch explains 'As the new academic year begins this exhibition demonstrates to students, staff and wider audiences the different histories of artistic endeavours at Deakin University and the remarkable transit of artist’s practices over time'.

Art School Confidential features early artworks by Deakin's prominent artists and creative researchers including never seen before examples of classical life drawing, folio entry submissions and first forays into new mediums such as moving image, installation and performance.'

More broadly, the exhibition celebrates the importance of a visual arts education, creative risk taking, failure and developing cultural experiences.’ said Lynch

Participating artists include Bradley Axiak, Anindita Banerjee, Wendy Beatty, Cameron Bishop, David Cross, Joel Gailer, Tara Gilbee, Simon Grennan, Aaron Hoffman, Victoria Holessis, Penelope Hunt, Todd Johnson, Ilona Jetmar, Katie Lee, Sean Loughrey, Amber Smith, Sorcha Wilcox, Annie Wilson, Bruce Zhou and performances by Zoë Bastin, Dan Koop, Olivia Millard and Luigi Vescio.
